Twashta Kasar

The Twashta Kasar (त्वष्टा कासार), Tambat, Twashta Brahman is a coppersmith community (caste), predominantly in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Twashta Kasar believe that they are descendant of Twashta, the father of Vishwakarma, principal engineer of Gods. The people are prominently from the Konkan region of Maharashtra. They have a sizable population in Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Nasik and Kolhapur and Goa.

The word 'Twashta' came from 'Twashta Rishi'. Twashta Rishi was chief engineer of the gods. Lineage of Twasta Rishi is as follows.
Varun deva (6260 BC) had five sons: Bhrugu, Angiras, Atri, Vashishta and Agastya.
Brugu Rishi (6240 BC) married to Divya daughter of Hiranya Kashyapu. He had a son Shukracharya & a daughter Laxmi who married to Bhagwan Vishnu.
Rishi Shukracharya (6220 BC) had 4 sons namely 1) Twashta 2)Varutri 3) Shunda 4) Murka. The planet Venus (Shukra) has been named after Shukracharya.
Twashta (6200 BC) was married to Yashodhra, daughter of Bhakt Pralhad (devotee of Bhagwan Vishu). He had 3 sons namely 1) Trishira 2)Vrtra 3) Vishwakarma

The word ''Tambat'' comes from "tamba" or copper in Marathi. A bird, the tambat (coppersmith barbet), is named after the way it strikes woood, likened to a coppersmith striking metal with a hammer.
To make water pots of copper and brass is the hereditary business of this community. Over time the artisans refocused their business on making fancy designer showpieces of copper and brass.
Twashta Kasar presents an interesting aspect of a Brahmin in embryo. They follow the Brahmins rituals, they have a custom of Upanayana, a threading ceremony as a Sanskar. They possess Brahminisitic gotras. They also have customs like Gondhal, an religious practice of the Maratha community in Maharashtra. Gondhal is performed in the house during auspicious occasions like weddings and thread ceremonies.
The Colonies of this community are named Tambat Ali. They are an interconnected maze of streets where the coppersmiths have their workshops.

The primary religion of Twashta Kasar is Hindu. Twashta Kasar community worships Kalika as a guardian deity ( Palak Devta). They have established "Twashta Kasar Samaj Samstha Kalika Mandir" in every city wherever they have a sizable population. The Samaj Samstha is a community center where they organize events. Ganeshostav is a popular festival. In Pune the community starts their Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav, by the hands of Lokmaya Bal Gangadhar Tilak.
Indian cricketer Ajit Wadekar, actor/director Chinmay Mandlekar, Vinay Edekar, Bhushan Kadu, Dipti Samel, Pune's former deputy commissioner Madhukar Wadke,former Mayor of Pune Digambar Shantaram Kadu (Bhai Kadu) and novelist Baba Padamji are notable figures from the community.
